Why selling Monreal right now doesn’t make sense

Now obviously, this is my opinion, so feel free to disagree or whatever. The comments section is there for debate.

That said, let’s all be nice to each other.

So there is a fair bit of noise about Nacho Monreal and a move back to Spain. He’s been an excellent servant to Arsenal and he seems like a genuinely nice guy.

Here’s where a transfer doesn’t work for me. He has 12 months left on his deal, so til the end of this season. He can play both Left-full back and on the left of a back three. It can be argued that he doesn’t have the stamina to play left Wing-back, albeit he still seems to do a decent job of that from Full-back.

The alternatives within the squad for the left-back role are of course Sead Kolasinac and the shiny, new Kieran Tierney – who has clearly been purchased to replace Monreal.

To put it simply, one of those alternatives cannot play left-back, Sead Kolasinac. He’s proven time and time again that defensively he cannot play the role. He was a free transfer and is on a decent wage. I think move on Sead, spend the next 12 months looking at alternatives to back up Tierney post Monreals departure.

It also gives us an opportunity to bring in more money to build in January if required.

The financial return on moving on Monreal will be limited, probably around 3 million. What’s the point. I bet we could get circa 15 million for Sead Kolasinac and his wages off the bill. That makes more sense to me.

I’m not saying what makes sense to me will necessarily make sense to Arsenal, or maybe the deals simply aren’t there, but it’s the way I’d like it to play out.

Let’s wait and see.
