Spectacularly inconsistent–how to find a 5ft striker
on January 2, 2013 at 9:30 amPosted In: Arsenal
I spent the New Year break away at the folks, so was completely unplugged from my blog for a few days which was at times frustrating, but also refreshing. In that short period, Arsenal have played twice and given a sharp, digitally enhanced insight into our season. We have been spectacular at times, mediocre in regularity and awful at worst.
For a side that has oft been lauded for its attacking intelligence and movement, we attacked Newcastle with a verve not often seen this season. It clicked, we fancied our chances and really came out to play against Newcastle. It was a rollercoaster, but the 7:3 scoreline didn

It is all a shambles. The team are not united, few leaders in teh side and a manager that looks as if he is on auto pilot.
Am i the only person that thinks that AW looks like an undertaker – is he really going to motivate a group of overpaid under qualified players to win games.
The last few games we were papering over the cracks. truth is that we scores 4 goals in the lasy 20 of the game vs Newcastle only because we had the Boxing game off against a very tired and depleted Newcastle team.
Psychologically, with 5 points behind 4th place (albeit with a game in hand) i can see us drifting.
Our only hope is winning the Champions league a la Chelsea last season… can you see that happening?
Hey Wiggie
Happy New Year to you and all WiganGooner readers and commenters!!
Really enjoyed reading your heartfelt and analytical blog today. Totally agree on your observations re the Pod, as well as the challenges we are currently facing with playing Theo up-front.
I am treating it as a bad day at the office for now.
Let’s hope the boys does us good again against Swansea this weekend.
Hi Total,
Thank you so much, Happy New Year to you too
I’m slowly returning to positive thoughts. Fingers crossed for Swansea – they’re capable of beating us so we need to turn in an Arsenal performance, rather than a margate one.

*do (not does)
Well put, WG.
It was a poor and disappointing game from an Arsenal perspective, altho in fairness Southampton played very well and were tactically astute!
Pod did not play well, as you pointed out, but so many of the team played in a way more associated with pub teams.
Have a Happy New Year, both for you and your great Blog, and I will return to read your work with as much enthusiasm as ever!!
WG,
You hit on something that really bugged me. Chezzer who played well otherwise, kept lumping his goal kicks and drop outs high up field, which was totally counter productive.
Even if Giroud was playing instead of little Theo, it would be a pointless tactic, because a key weakness for Chezzer is the inaccuracy of his kicks, which often sail over the touchline!!
Hi RA
Happy New Year!!
Totally agree with you. I think too many players expected to coast the game after the first 10 minutes and just took their foot off the gas. Very frustrating. Its a pub-team mentality and not befitting a professional footballer.
Fingers crossed they apply themselves against the Swans.

Hi WG,
That is what I like about our game this weekend: we have to give our all to win it and that is just what is required now. Let the real Arsenal, which we know is inside there, stand up and be counted!
Hi Total,
Totally agree with you – its a habit, but a comfortable one to have. We need to get a bit of pride back. Its OK smashing teams for 7 goals, but we need to be getting 3 points every game.

Hello WG
I find that Walcott struggles to get on the end of any sort of cross, be it low or high and tends to simply hide behind defenders instead of going into 50:50 challenges. His only asset seems to be punishing teams that hold a relatively high line. This means he will be borderline useless against teams who know how to defend, and thus should NOT be allowed to play as striker for a club trying to regain any sort of status as a top club. He has simply done my head in, good riddance I say !!
