Well, that was a cracker of a result.

I find the anger and bile directed at Arsenal ridiculous. It was a game of football that we didn’t do enough to win. We made daft mistakes and West Ham are a good side. We just didn’t deal well enough with an attacker who will not score a hat-trick again in 2016.

Who’s to blame. Plenty of suspects, giving away terrible free-kicks and allowing crosses to come in.

Simply what needed to happen was for Gabriel and Koscielny to tell Elneny to sit deeper and help out Bellerin and Monreal. Both of which were shorn of cover on the flanks. We needed to play smarter at 2:0, we needed to defend smarter and  stop the balls getting into the box. The first goal was exactly that, a cross from Cresswell, Carroll 1v1 on Monreal was never going to be an ideal match and it ended in a goal for Carroll. Crosses into the box like that are Carroll’s bread and butter and we needed to give him more attention.

There was a spot of fortune around the second goal, Carroll’s first attempt rebounding perfectly for his follow-up. You can’t stop that. You can’t train against that. It does come back to the same thing however, stopping the crosses into the box. It could be argued that we needed Cech back in goal, he would probably have caught that ball rather than punching – I expect him to return for the forthcoming fixture. Wenger did what I expected him to do, he kept faith with a ‘keeper who had played extremely well in his previous two fixtures and with Cech just back from injury I saw no need to change.

The third goal was practically a carbon-copy of the first – Antonio burst past Monreal down the left, he crossed to the back post, and Carroll out-jumped Bellerin to head home.

*** Guess What ***

Carroll is always going to position himself against Bellerin and Monreal because he is bigger, stronger and better in the air than both of them. The solution? They need to communicate with Koscielny and Gabriel respectively and get assistance. You have the CB goal side – always – but you have to shout because as the full-back being targeted you are tracking the runner. You are running back with the striker and you can call the centre-back over.

Schoolboy stuff.

Not a great result. But West Ham are no pushovers and a 3:3 draw isn’t the worst result. It is just making it harder for us to get to St Totteringham’s Day. Let’s hope we get there.
